Outrider was founded in 2003 by John Shaw and members of his family after completing the sale of a highly successful company in the video security market.

John Shaw began his career as a computer programmer which lead him to the founding of many companies in the computer hardware and software field. The most successful of these was Progressive Systems in Birmingham Alabama. Progressive sales grew by more than 300% a year causing it to win the Birmingham Business Journal's "Fastest Growing Company" award in 2000 and 2001. Progressive also won the Jemison Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence in 2002.
